With the remnants of Hurricane Florence dumping inches of rain on the local area, it is unknown exactly how it will affect the prep sports schedule.

QUICK HITS

- With the remnants of Hurricane Florence dumping several inches of rain in some areas, this week’s high school sports schedule is on hold until further notice. Until schools return to session, extracurricular activities will not resume.

- Maybe a break in action is the last thing a pair of Gastonia city rivals want or need. As of Sept. 14, Ashbrook and Hunter Huss are in a three-way tie with Kings Mountain atop Big South 3A. The teams are 2-0 thus far. Ashbrook has 14 goals to its credit since starting league play, while Huss has allowed only one goal. Meanwhile, Kings Mountain is the lone undefeated boys soccer team in the area at 7-0-1.

- This past week saw a pair of area teams fall from the ranks of the unbeatens - Kings Mountain in a non-conference tilt against Clover, and South Point via a 3-0 sweep against Southwestern 2A foe R-S Central. East Lincoln is the last area squad yet to lose, the Lady Mustangs now 11-0.

- Not only did the Gaston Day varsity volleyball team help clinch its school the Battle of the Bell event, it also continued to dominate competition. Through Sept. 14, the Spartans played the third-toughest schedule in North Carolina. Gaston Day is now 14-6 following a sweep of Gaston Christian.

BOYS SOCCER GAME OF THE WEEK: Kings Mountain at Ashbrook (Wednesday); if able to play, this fixture could potentially offer the winner a leg up in Big South 3A play. The contest matches two of the area’s top clubs - Ashbrook riding a seven-game undefeated streak, while Kings Mountain is the last local side yet to experience defeat.

VOLLEYBALL MATCH OF THE WEEK: Crest at Kings Mountain (Tuesday); the top two teams in Big South 3A clash for conference supremacy. The Cleveland County rivals both sit at 6-0 in league play, each having yet to lose a set.
