Jackson Fuller is excited to take the best high school sports coverage and make it even better
I've always been a firm believer that change can bring the best out of people. This year, we're hoping some changes to our sports department bring you the best possible coverage of high school sports.
In early June, I was lucky enough to earn the high school sports writer position with the StarNews. I've worked for the paper for three years, starting as an intern when I was a senior at UNCW and working as a full-time night editor last year. Throughout that time, I have seen some great people produce some amazing content on the high school sports beat.
My plan is to drive the high school sports coverage ahead with a huge emphasis on our digital content.
A podcast dedicated to high school sports is coming your way this fall. There will also be a weekly newsletter highlighting our content from the previous week. Readers can sign up for the email newsletter at www.StarNewsOnline.com/newsletters.
Photo galleries online will continue to be a big part of our coverage, but we're looking to add extended captions this year that help the photos tell a story. We're also going to have content such as polls and videos exclusive to our Facebook and Twitter pages.
When attending games, I plan to spend more time talking to coaches and players in search of even more worthwhile feature stories. We will dive deeper into our game coverage, hoping to provide better analysis of the actual game and convey how the outcome impacts not only that night, but also the entire season.
As usual, our game stories will be posted at StarNewsVarsity.com the same night of coverage, accompanied by photo galleries and videos that include highlights and interviews. Our High School Roundup will remain a focal point, with recaps published online any night there are results on the field.
The You Pick 'Em challenge, print football preview on Fridays, Twitter updates, and our Player of the Week interviews are all here to stay. It is my hope that this blend of old and new strategies gives you the accurate and high-quality coverage of high school sports Southeastern North Carolina deserves.
I've lived here for seven years and know we have a special high school sports community. I'm looking forward to telling its story.
