Naturals win city championship in inspired performance

The difference was simple for Tyler Wiles and his Naturals teammates in Friday night’s Burlington adult city softball championship at Burlington City Park No. 1.

"We had something to play for," he said.

Tied with Saturated Gas 12-12 in the bottom of the seventh inning, Naturals third baseman Jeremy Vaughn launched a two-run home run over the fence to seal a 14-12 walk-off victory.

"Win it," Vaughn said. "I had no intentions of the ball staying in. I said, ‘See a good pitch, hit it, hit it far.’ "

The Naturals fell behind Saturated Gas 8-0 in the third inning on a grand slam from Cy Almond, but fought back from there.

"We were playing with a little chip on our shoulder — our coach (Sammy Rose) can’t be here because his mom is sick and not doing well," Wiles, the Naturals shortstop and interim coach, said. "We just had to battle through it. He’s battling for us and so we had to battle for him."

Casey Jones, who led the Naturals with a 3-for-4 performance, came to the plate as the first batter in the bottom of the seventh inning and with the Naturals trailing 12-11.

He belted what Wiles called a "no-doubter" to center field to tie the game.

"I talked to Sammy (on Friday) before we came out here and I just told him our team had a different look in their eye this week," Wiles said. "We play all year long together and sometimes the season can get pretty long and people get burnt out. … It’s hard to explain, but you can just tell when we’re on it and we’re pulling together."

Saturated Gas took the lead in the top of the seventh inning on an RBI double by Almond.

After the Naturals tied the game up 8-8 on a two-run triple from Dylan Isley in the fourth, the game swung back and forth between sides.

"(Saturated Gas) beat us in the finals last year and then we were a game short coming up to them the year before," Wiles said. "They’re a great team. … We know all those guys; play them every year. It was just a great game."

Wiles, Rob Pierce and Tyler Disque also homered for the Naturals.

Billy Owens and Justin Pittman each went 3-for-4 for Saturated Gas, while Antwaine Coble and Geronki Coble both homered.

• In the playoff consolation, STS scored a combined 14 runs in the fifth and sixth innings and defeated Pure Chaos 21-14.

Jamie Kimrey led STS at the plate with a 4-for-4 night. Pure Chaos was led by Justin Luck’s 4-for-5 performance.
