It was a disappointing ending to a disappointing season for Jacksonville American Legion Post 265.

After losing 3-1 to second-seeded Whiteville in the completion of a suspended game, seventh-seeded Post 265 was on the wrong side of a 16-2 decision in the second game as Post 137 swept the best-of-three American Legion Area II opening playoff series Friday night.

Jacksonville, which managed just a one-out single in the fifth inning by Houston Lish in the second game, finishes 3-24 while Whiteville (17-7) advances to the second round.

“I think they kind of put everything they got into that first game,” Post 265 coach Ben Stewart said. “Then when they lost by two runs I guess we just decided to shut it down.

“Even if you lose, you still got some life, and we didn’t show it coming into game two and they took advantage of it.”

The opener Thursday night at Legion Stadium in Whiteville was suspended in the top of the fourth with the score tied 1-1 and Jacksonville having runners at second and third.

Stewart was asked if the result might have been different had rain not forced the suspension.

“No,” he said without elaboration.

In the opener when play resumed at White Oak High School, Mike Franklin struck out to end the threat generated one night earlier.

Then Whiteville took the lead in the fifth on a two-run homer by Gage Hammonds that hit the scoreboard about 340 feet away.

Meanwhile, Dylan Lawson dominated on the mound, setting down seven straight before a one-out walk in the seventh. He struck out the final two Post 265 batters for the win.

In the second game, Whiteville got all the runs it needed in the first on an RBI-triple by Hammonds and a run-scoring single by Dawson Elliott to spark a four-run inning.

The visitors made it 8-0 in the second behind another Hammonds’ two-run blast, this one over the 355-foot sign in dead center.

At that point, Jacksonville had sent only three batters to the plate.
