Four golfers finished in the red on a challenging day at the Gastonia golf course.
Chapel Hill’s Ethan Luke shot a 1-under 69 to claim medalist honors at Thursday’s N.C. Junior Boys Championship qualifier at Catawba Creek Golf Course.
Luke was one of 46 players whose spot is assured in the 51st N.C. Junior Boys’ Championship, which will be Tuesday at Charlotte’s Pine Island Country Club. He was followed by Pilot Mountain’s Landon Barnes, Andrew Plate, of Greensboro, and Matthews’ Ben McCartney, each of whom finished at even-par.
Those players were the only ones to finish in the red, as the course proved rather challenging for players.
Gastonia’s Eli Denton finished tied for fifth after shooting a 1-over 71. The local golfer birdied five holes during Thursday’s 18-hole event.
Shelby’s Juye Ou will be among those advancing to the championship round, this after finishing tied for 24th with a six-over 76.
“I did great on the front. I started off well,” he said. “Two-under through like six, but on the back I had like five straight bogeys. I just couldn’t putt well.”
Ou was paired with Jordan Kustas, of Charlotte, who also finished six-over for the day.
“I felt great,” Kustas said. “The front nine and back nine were pretty similar. I started well. I didn’t finish too well.”
