ALBEMARLE — The Randolph County Post 45 American Legion baseball team opened the 2018 season with a 2-0 loss to Stanly County on Thursday.
“I saw some good things and some things we need to work on,” Post 45 coach Ronnie Pugh said.
“Travis (Winslow) pitched a good ballgame. He kept us in it. We had opportunities to score two, three times. We missed some signals and had some baserunning mistakes. Those are things we can correct and get better at. We played a pretty flawless game until we booted that one.”
Winslow gave up two unearned runs on two hits, with six strikeouts and a walk in five innings of work. He had a no-hitter through 4 2/3 innings.
Randolph County had the tying run on base in the top of the seventh, but couldn’t bring him home.
Post 45 had three hits total and stranded three runners on base.
“We haven’t spent a lot of time together and we’re still missing people, but that’s the nature of Legion baseball,” Pugh said.
Post 76 scored its runs in the bottom of the sixth on a bunt and a throwing error.
The two teams face off again tonight as RC hosts SC at McCrary Park at 7 p.m. Post 45 also has home games Saturday and Sunday.
