Sometimes you really can go home.
Vance Hanner has returned to East Davidson as head football coach one year after leaving the Golden Eagles, the school announced Thursday.
"Very humbled and excited about the opportunity to come back home," Hanner said.
Hanner replaces David Hines, who resigned after one season. Hines replaced Hanner and went 6-5 but resigned. The Eagles did not qualify for the state playoffs.
"We were fortunate to have coach Hines here," said East principal John DiBonaventura. "He brought some good things into the program. Coach Hanner, I know he was the former coach before that. I wasn't principal here at that time but I'm looking to continue some of the good things that coach Hines brought into play and also capitalize on some of the good things that coach Hanner brought to the table before my time here at East Davidson as well."
He has hit the ground running.
"It's been great to reconnect with the staff and the players," Hanner said. "Everyone at east has been very welcoming in my return."
After directing the Eagles to an 8-4 record in 2016 and coach of the year honors in the Central Carolina Conference, Hanner saw his profile elevated. He accepted an offer to become the head coach at West Montgomery, whose principal, Benjie Brown, was a three-time state championship coach at Thomasville.
But after four days, Hanner changed his mind and left West Montgomery.
Hanner landed on the staff of Chris Adams at Ledford, where he also helped coach track. He was a physical education teacher at Ledford in the 2017-18 school year.
During his four-year tenure as head coach in his first stint at East, Hanner was 25-22 and directed the program to its first ever victories over Thomasville in 2014 and 2016.
Hanner was 9-3 in his first season, 2013, and reached the second round of the state playoffs. He was 3-8 in 2014 and that included a 7-6 win over Thomasville. The Eagles were 5-7 in 2015 and made the state playoffs.
Before he was head coach at East, Hanner was on the staff as an assistant coach for 11 seasons. He was also previously an assistant coach at Thomasville.
Hanner will teach conditioning classes at East.
