Promise Simmons-Wells went 3-for-3 with 6 RBIs and 3 runs to lead Southwest to a 13-3 softball home win over Trask in the Coastal 8 1-A/2-A Conference opener for both teams Wednesday.

The game was called after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

Simmons-Wells also had a double and a triple for the Stallions (3-2, 1-0), who play host to Croatan on Friday.

Payton Fry was 2-for-2 with 3 runs while Bri Hansley went 2-for-3 with 2 RBIs. Brittney Hylton earned the win after she struck out 6 and didn’t allow an earned run in a complete-game effort.


Dixon 15, Swansboro 6: Five players had 2 hits and at least 2 RBIs -- including Abbie Korenek, who drove in 3 runs -- as Dixon downed Swansboro in a nonconference game halted after five innings because of the 10-run mercy rule.

The Bulldogs (2-4) are at East Carteret on Friday. Swansboro (2-2) plays host to Laney on Thursday.



Swansboro 6, Croatan 3: Nate Shekey was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI as Swansboro defeated Croatan in a nonconference game.

Connor Behan allowed just 1 of Croatan’s 2 hits in going 5⅓ innings to pick up the win, allowing 1 earned run while striking out 2 and walking 2.

Swansboro (2-3) returns to action Wednesday at East Duplin. Croatan (2-3) is at Southwest on Friday.


Ashley 4, White Oak 3: White Oak gave up three runs in the top of the seventh inning in a nonconference loss to Ashley.

Ismael Ortega went 1-for-2 with a run and RBI for the Vikings (1-5), who play host to Lejeune on Friday. Ashley (6-0) plays host to South Brunswick on Friday.


Trask 5, Southwest 2: Southwest opened Coastal 8 1-A/2-A Conference play with a home loss to Trask.

The Stallions (1-5, 0-1) play host to Croatan on Friday while Trask (4-0, 1-0) plays host to Pender on Friday.

Justin Osbeck had a hit and run for Southwest.



Croatan 1, Swansboro 1: Swansboro’s Isabel Robayo scored in the second half to offset a first-half goal by Croatan’s Savannah McAloon as the nonconference foes finished in a tie - the fifth combined for the two teams this year.

Swansboro (2-2-3) plays host to Clinton on Friday while on the same day the Cougars (4-1-2) are at Southwest.



White Oak 8, Southwest 1: White Oak took 5 of 6 matches in singles en route to a nonconference win over Southwest at the Jacksonville Country Club.

Landry Gainey, Mike Nelson, Jeremy Penton, Jonah Jones and Noah Lausterer all won for the Vikings (1-2), who play host to Havelock on Thursday.


Greene Central 6, Croatan 3: Croatan dropped a nonconference match at Fort Benjamin Park to Greene Central.

Graham Guthrie and Mason Fails each won in singles play for the Cougars (2-2), who visit White Oak on Monday.


Goldsboro 8, East Duplin 1: East Duplin managed just one doubles win as the Panthers fell to Goldsboro in the East Central 2-A Conference opener for both teams.

The Panthers lone win came at No. 3 doubles from Will Hatcher and Nate Sheppard, 8-2.

East Duplin (2-2, 0-1) is at Spring Creek on Tuesday. Goldsboro (2-0, 1-0) is at Spring Creek on Wednesday.



Croatan 13, Havelock 5: Nathan Bradley scored 8 goals to help lead Croatan past Havelock in a Conference II match.

The Cougars (3-0, 3-0) are at West Carteret on Friday. Havelock (0-2, 0-2) travels to New Bern on Friday.


First Flight 12, Northside 5: Lacy Williams had 2 goals and an assist, and goalie Tyler Gambrell had 12 save,s but it wasn’t enough as Northside fell to First Flight in a Conference II match.

Northside (0-3, 0-3) plays host to Jacksonville on Friday. First Flight (3-1, 3-) is at Rose on Friday.



Northside 14, First Flight 4: Northside won its second game in three outings, downing First Flight in a Conference II match.

The Monarchs (2-1 in the league) play host to Jacksonville on Friday. First Flight (0-3, 0-3) entertains New Bern on Tuesday.


New Bern 16, Jacksonville 10: Jacksonville suffered a Conference II home loss, despite getting 6 goals from Allie Ingraham.

Kelsey Hart added 2 goals and an assist for the Cardinals (0-2, 0-1), who visit Northside on Friday.
