ASHEBORO — A rough start to the season continued Wednesday for the Asheboro High School varsity baseball team as the Blue Comets dropped a 9-7 Mid-Piedmont Conference decision to Eastern Guilford at chilly McCrary Park.

The loss leaves AHS 0-3 in league play and 0-4 overall heading into today’s nonleague contest at Western Forsyth beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The Blue Comets scored three quick runs in the first inning for the lead, but the Wildcats scored eight unanswered runs and held on as the tying run was thrown out at second base to end the game.

“Our problem is we’re not throwing strikes, we’re not attacking the zone,” AHS coach Brett Hoogkamp said. “We’re not doing the fundamental things we’ve been taught.”

Singles by Austin Curry and Tatum Marsh set up a three-run first inning for AHS with Garrett Foland and Levi Kinney knocking in runs with sacrifice flies.

A five-run second inning for EG, which recorded just one hit in the inning, gave the lead to the Wildcats for good. AHS contributed three walks, two hit batters and an error.

EG made it 8-3 in the fifth, getting a two-run homer from Alex Gowda in the inning, before the Blue Comets tallied three times to close to within 8-6. Logan Hamilton and Matthew Thompson had run-scoring ground balls.

Trailing 9-6 entering the bottom of the seventh, the Blue Comets recorded three hits, but a batter was thrown out at second base to end the game after recording an RBI single.

AHS had nine hits in the contest with Curry and Foland getting two each.

EG (1-1, 2-3) had eight hits. Collin Smith had two and Gowda had two. Cameron Edmunds, who picked up the win on the mound, also had two hits for EG.
