Male Athlete of the Week

Stancil Bowles, East Duplin baseball

East Duplin junior pitcher and shortstop Stancil Bowles went 6-for-14 with 4 RBIs, 5 runs, 2 doubles and a triple to help the Panthers to three wins last week. He also pitched four inning with 2 strikeouts and 1 walk in an 8-6 win over Dixon on March 8.


Are you happy with the start of the season?

“It always could be better, but it’s been good so far.”


What’s stood out so far?

“Our offense and defense. We’ve been hitting the ball pretty decent.”


Shortstop or pitcher. Which position is your favorite?

“Shortstop for sure. I like being able to control the infield and I try my best to pep the guys up and help lead the team.”


In what ways have you improved in your three varsity seasons?

“My confidence for sure. As a freshman playing, I was scared and nervous.”


Favorite player?

“Probably Mike Trout.”


Favorite food?

“I would have to say subs from Subway.”


Any hobbies?

“I like to golf and hunt.”


How good can the Panthers be this season?

“I think we will be all right if we fine-tune some things and put them all together.”


Female Athlete of the Week

Suzanne Jarman, East Duplin softball

East Duplin freshman Suzanna Jarman leads the Panthers with a .667 batting average. She went 5-for-9 with 3 RBIs, 8 runs, 1 double and a triple to lead the team to three wins.


Are you happy with the start of the season?

“I feel we always have room to improve, but right now we are playing well.”


Centerfield or pitcher. Which position do you like the best?

“I guess centerfield because that’s where I normally start at.”


How many years have you played softball?

“Since I was like 6. I started playing with my dad and my mom was always there to support me. so I think of my parents when I play.”


Is varsity softball all you thought it would be?

“It’s a lot harder than middle school, but I play travel ball so that helps. Coach Greg (Jenkins) really pushes us and he helped us think about the little things.”


What’s the key to your success?

“Just having confidence and trusting in God.”


Favorite food?

“That’s a hard one. Probably my mom’s lasagna.”


Any hobbies?

“I like to lay on the hammock and go to the beach.”


How good can the softball team be?

“We can be really good if we put our minds to it, trust in God and listen to our coaches.”
