Shelby collected its first win of the season by stunning Southwestern 2A Conference foe East Rutherford, 6-5, Tuesday night at Keeter Stadium/Veterans Field.
The Golden Lions were down 5-0 entering the bottom of the fifth but exploded for six runs in the inning to take the lead, then held off the Cavaliers the rest of the way.
In the fateful fifth, Brandon Irvin had a key RBI single and Nick Stites’ two-run triple tied the score. Stites crossed with what proved to be the game winner on a wild pitch.
Josh Smith started and went five innings for the win. Spencer Triplett worked two innings in relief for the save.
Shelby got two hits apiece from Nick Weaver and Irvin. Jordan Harris had three hits and two RBIs for East.
Shelby visits South Point Friday.
Crest 5, Ashbrook 2 — The Chargers stayed unbeaten with a Big South 3A road win Tuesday.
Riley Cheek started on the mound and went four innings for the win. Crest got one inning of relief work from Caleb Plummer, Lawson Harrill and CJ Mayhue to close out the Green Wave.
Luke Scism led Crest with two hits and two RBIs on the night. Cheek also contributed two hits and Plummer provided a RBI single.
Crest will host Hunter Huss Friday.
KM 13, Hunter Huss 0 (5) — The Mountaineers scored all 13 runs in the third inning to end the Big South 3A contest early.
Starter Bryce Fisher earned the win pitching four innings giving up one hit. Seth Kennedy pitched the final inning for the Mountaineers.
David Bell, who had a home run, and KC Champion had two hits each for the victors Alec Bell had a triple and Daniel Bagwell a double in Kings Mountain’s 10-hit attack.
UMass Lowell 6, GWU 0 — Gardner-Webb managed only four hits in dropping a 6-0 decision to UMass Lowell at Duke University’s Jack Coombs Field on Tuesday afternoon.
Gardner-Webb (10-7) was shut out for the second straight game, while UMass Lowell (6-8) held the Diamond ‘Dogs to their lowest hit total of the 2018 season.
Connor Metelski (1-0) earned the win for UMass Lowell, scattering three base hits in 7.1 innings of work with four strikeouts. Brian Dolan (0.2 IP, 1K) and Matt O’Connor (1.0 IP, 2 K) each made relief appearances.
The Dogs’ Noah Davis (0-1) was saddled with the loss, allowing three runs on five hits with a pair of strikeouts in two innings. Spratlin gave up a pair of runs on one hit in 2.2 innings of relief, while Johnson allowed three runs on three hits with six strikeouts in 2.1 innings of work. Zach Duncan worked the final frame, allowing a run on two hits.
GWU got a pair of hits from Mickey Dugan in the loss.
Gardner-Webb plays at North Carolina Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Boshamer Stadium.
