East Gaston and South Point fall in Southwestern 2A tournament basketball semifinals

CHARLOTTE - Three Gaston Day seniors have been invited to play in the annual N.C. boys private school all-star game at Providence Day School on March 3.

M.J. Armstrong, Nate Hinton and Quan McCluney will represent the Spartans in a game that also includes McDonald's All-American's Coby White (Wilson Greenfield Academy) and Devon Dotson (Providence Day). White has signed with North Carolina and Dotson with Kansas.

The girls game will begin at 1 p.m. with the boys to follow at 2:30 p.m.

 

Boys high school basketball

East Rutherford 77, South Point 64: South Point, which shared the league regular season title, fell to 18-7 overall in the Southwestern 2A Conference tournament semifinal loss.

R-S Central 63, East Gaston 61: Caleb Bridgewater (18 points), Cameron Stackston (13) and Jason Ritch (11) led East Gaston, which fell to 14-10 in the Southwestern 2A Conference tournament semifinal loss.

East Lincoln 71, Bandys 69, OT: Coleson Leach’s layup at the overtime buzzer gave East Lincoln (22-4) a South Fork 2A Conference semifinal tournament win at Catawba Valley Community College. Leach and Kabian McClendon scored 22 points each to lead the Mustangs, who will take on the winner of Thursday’s Lincolnton vs. Newton-Conover in the championship on Friday at 8 p.m. at CVCC.

 

Girls high school basketball

Lake Norman Charter 52, Lincolnton 40: The Lady Wolves led 9-0 after one quarter but Lake Norman Charter had 22 points in the second quarter and took the victory over regular season champion Lincolnton (18-7). Hundley Rhyne scored 14 points and Mica Dyson added 12 for the Wolves.

In Wednesday's editions of the Gazette, Gaston Day girls basketball players Olivia King and Saniya Wilson were incorrectly identified. Also, Wilson is an eight-grader for the Spartans. The Gazette regrets the error and is happy to make the correction.
