GASTONIA - Harold Varner III competes in his ninth PGA event of the 2017-18 season on Thursday in the Genesis Open at Riveria Country Club at Pacific Palisades, Cal.
Varner has 95 points to rank 118th in FedEx Cup points. He's had three top-50 finishes and missed three cuts while ranking 18th in driving distance.
Rob Tate (East Gaston 2005) was recently named interim head wrestling coach at Queens University in Charlotte.
A part of the Royals coaching staff since the program began a year ago, Tate was a two-time All-American, one-time state champion and member of three East Gaston high school state champions before wrestling a Gardner-Webb and beginning a coaching career that has taken him to East Gaston, Charlotte Country Day and Queens.

Nate Long (South Point 2015) was recently named a third team NCAA Division III Scholar All-American selection at Maryville, Tenn., College. Previously, Long had been named first team NCAA Division II Scholar All-American for the South Region.
A junior, Long has started 57 of 60 games in his three-year career and has been a two-time team defensive MVP, a two-time USA South all-tournament selection, a one-time All-USA South selection and a one-time All-South Regional selection.
Alex Patton (North Gaston 2014) has been hired as a wide receivers coach at Culver-Stockton College, a NAIA school in the Heart of America Athletic Conference.
