FAYETTEVILLE - Retired Army LTC John Paul Hlavnicka, 65, passed away on December 11, 2017 at his home surrounded by family and friends after a short but valiant battle with cancer.

John was born March 17, 1952 in Breckenridge, Minnesota to the late James Hlavnicka and Kathleen Blouin Hlavnicka. In addition to his father, John is preceded in death by his wife, Lisa Reeves Hlavnicka, and his sisters, Terry and Nancy.

John's survivors include his mother, Kathleen; his siblings, Julie, Janice, Timothy, Thomas and Pat; numerous nieces and nephews, and the love of his life, Carla J. Mahaffey.

John proudly served his country in the United States Army for a total of 23 years. The past 16 years stationed at Womack Army Medical Center at Fort Bragg, NC serving as a Combat-Medic/CRNA/JSOC. John served seven tours of duty in Iraq and Afghanistan with the Joint Special Operations Group, Fort Bragg, NC. He received several meritorious awards for that service including (2) Bronze Stars. He was extremely proud of his Airborne Wings and his affiliation with the JSOC. He retired from the service in 2008 with the rank of Lt. Col.

John began his education in a one room schoolhouse in rural Wyndmere, ND. He graduated from Penn State University with a BSS in nursing and went on to graduate from the University of Texas in Anesthesia.

John enjoyed riding his Harley, photography, and restoring cars, especially his 1966 Chevelle and 1974 Chevy Nova. He spent his life serving his country and was a true hero of our nation's war on terror. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Lt. Col. John P. Hlavnicka will be buried in Arlington Cemetery with full military honors on April 24, 2018, 2018 at 3:00 p.m.
