The Cumberland County Animal Shelter is waiving adoption fees for dogs and cats on Aug. 18 as part of a nationwide "Clear the Shelters'' pet adoption event.
This will be the first year that Cumberland County has participated in the event, said Elaine Smith, the director of Cumberland County Animal Control.
Wake, Durham and Orange counties have participated in the past and have had success, she said. Wake County had more than a thousand people come through its shelter last year during the adoption event, Smith said.
Animal Control is partnering with WRAL and Mix 101.5 for the event, which will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the shelter at 4704 Corporation Drive.
"We're going to do our best to make it a positive experience for everyone,'' Smith said.
Although adoption fees will be waived, standard adoption policies and procedures will still apply. Adopters must have a photo ID and be at least 18 years old. Only two pets will be adopted per household during the event. Adoptions will be on a first-come, first-served basis, county officials said in a news release.
On Friday, the shelter was at capacity with around 300 dogs and cats, Smith said.
During the Aug. 18 event, she anticipates about 40 cats and 50 to 60 dogs will be available for adoption.
Adoption fees are usually $68 to $117, based on the animal’s gender and weight. Included in the normal, and waived fees, is a rabies vaccination, pet privilege license, microchip and spay or neuter operation.
Most of the animals at the event will have had heartworm and FeLV/FIV testing.
Smith said the shelter is trying to get all of the animals that will be involved in the event spayed or neutered. Animals that have not been spayed or neutered will not be able to leave the shelter until the procedure is completed.
The shelter's regular adoption hours are Monday through Friday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 1 to 5 p.m.
