One home jamboree and several teams on the road will mark the last Friday of preseason action for local teams as they enjoy the last dress-rehearsal for the upcoming football season.

Blacksburg will host the Iron City Classic, with four local teams in action in the three-segment event. Spartanburg Christian will square off against Southside Christian in the opening game at 6 p.m., followed by Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy (N.C.) vs. Landrum. Broome will take on host Blacksburg in the nightcap.

The Iron City Classic has an interesting twist this season. Stadium improvements at Blacksburg have the Wildcats playing at Gaffney Middle School’s W.K. Brumbach Stadium for at least the foreseeable future, and possibly the entire season.

“It’s our first time out there, and I don’t know whether it will create a home-field advantage or not,” Blacksburg head coach Drew Chisholm said. “We haven’t practiced over there and we don’t plan to. Our approach is that the field is the same length and same width as it always is, and we just have to go and do what we do.”

Chisholm said the matchups made the event an attractive one.

“I think we’ve got a real competitive field,” he said. “That’s why we do it. We go to a jamboree with some big schools and there’s really not a place where small schools can get together, so we’re glad to do this. There should be some good games. I think T.J. and Landrum ought to be a knock-down, drag-out fight. And we get Broome at the end, who we’ve thrown with a couple times this summer. We know they’re holding a lot of cards, and they’ll be a good barometer of what we can do, because we won’t play anyone on our schedule any more talented than they are.”

Two teams will participate in the Greenville Jamboree at Sirrine Stadium. Greer will play Hillcrest in the event’s opener at 6 p.m., with Boiling Springs taking on Easley in the following matchup.

Byrnes is in the Football City USA Kickoff at Rock Hill’s District Three Stadium, taking on South Pointe at approximately 6:30, 7 p.m. Woodruff will play Saluda at Clinton’s Game Night event at while Dorman is at J.L. Mann’s jamboree in the last game of the night, at approximately 9 p.m.

Chesnee and Union County will both participate in scrimmages on Friday. The Eagles host Chase (NC) at 6 p.m., while the Yellow Jackets will travel to York for a game-type scrimmage at 7 p.m.
