Checkers is in the process of opening five to seven new locations in Spartanburg County.

Robert Bhagwandat, developer of franchise development for Checkers and Rally’s, said the company has been working on opening new locations throughout the Upstate for about eight months and is in discussions with franchisees about opening the locations.

“We’ve got a pretty aggressive plan to get there,” he said.

Bhagwandat said Checkers is considering multiple locations for the restaurants, including properties in the Dorman Center area, along with Arcadia, Fairforest, Valley Falls and Zion Hill.

Checkers’ Southeast roots and Spartanburg’s people and history made the city an ideal location for the restaurants, Bhagwandat said.

“Checkers, of course, was born in Mobile, Alabama, so when you have a little bit of that Southern flair, it tends to do well in a lot of Southern towns,” he said. “… And a lot of families like to be able to stretch their dollar as far as they can and still enjoy an evening out with the family, and that’s what we see a lot in the Spartanburg area.”

Bhagwandat said opening dates for the new locations won’t be released until talks with franchisees are completed and locations are finalized.

Once construction begins, it takes six to nine months to complete a restaurant.

Each new location will hire about 22-27 employees.

Checkers also plans to open about 15 locations in Greenville County, Bhagwandat said.
