RANDLEMAN — An Asheboro-area man who escaped custody in Randleman Tuesday was jailed under $250,000 bond after being recaptured in Asheboro.
Phillip Daniel Boroughs, 32, of 1551 Cedar Grove Drive, Asheboro, is in the Randolph County Jail on a long list of charges, including resisting a public officer; possession of stolen goods; misdemeanor larceny; felony probation violation; driving while license revoked; possession of drug paraphernalia; possession with intent to manufacture/sell/deliver a Schedule I controlled substance; and possession of heroin.
Randleman Police Chief Steve Leonard said officers spotted Boroughs driving in Randleman and — knowing that he was wanted on an outstanding warrant — followed him to a Reece Street residence, where he was taken into custody.
When they got to the police station, Boroughs managed to get one of his hands free from the handcuffs and took off running. Officers gave chase but lost sight of him in a wooded area off Naomi Street.
Leonard said officers knew the address in north Asheboro where Boroughs’ girlfriend lived, so Randleman and Asheboro officers went there later, located and arrested him.
The misdemeanor larceny charge was for still possessing the handcuffs when he escaped.
