1 Newport events

Newport has scheduled two weekend events for the Newport Community Park at 200 Howard Blvd.

On Friday, an interactive playground will be featured from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with bazooka battle, human foosball and galaxy arena. There will also be cornhole boards and other activities. The event celebrates the end of the school year.

On Saturday, the movie in the park will feature the film “Peter Rabbit.” Activities begin at 6:30 p.m., with the movie at 7:30 p.m. The activity for the event is planting a garden in a cup.

2 Fort Macon State Park

Fort Macon State Park in Atlantic Beach will feature a variety of programs and activities this weekend.

A program on crabs along the Crystal Coast is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. Friday at the bathhouse. Those attending can learn all about the types of crabs that call the beaches and estuaries home.

Cannon Day will be from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, with cannon demonstrations set for 10:30 and 11:30 a.m., and 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 p.m. Those attending can learn about the various types of cannons and the loading and firing procedures.

Musket firing demonstrations are scheduled for 10 to 11 a.m. and 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

3 Flag Day Celebration

The public is invited to attend the annual Flag Day Celebration, presented by Elks Lodge No. 764, on Saturday at Union Point Park.

The free celebration begins at 11 a.m. at the park gazebo beside the Neuse River.

Returning will be the 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band from Cherry Point.

The event features flags from the earliest days of the American Revolution to the current day, complimented by appropriate patriotic music.

Also joining the celebration will be Alisha Mike singing the national anthem and other patriotic songs, accompanied by the band.

 

4 Bridgeton Blueberry Festival

The Bridegton BlueberryFest will be Friday from 4 to 9 p.m. and Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Vernon Blades Park, 901 B St., Bridgeton.

There is $5 parking for the festival, which also features free concerts. The entertainment includes first-night beach music with The Breeze Band at 7 p.m. and Saturday afternoon country music with Steel Shot opening at 1 p.m. and headliner Bryan Mayer at 2 p.m.

Enjoy a blueberry pancake breakfast on Saturday from 8 to 11 a.m.

That will be followed by the Blueberry Bakeoff at 510 B St.

5 Coastal Railroaders open house

The Carolina Coastal Railroaders, a model railroad club, hosts an open house on Saturday at 1916 S. Glenburnie Road, Suite 11.

The free event is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and includes live running train exhibits and a chance to talk with the railroaders.

The club has about 35 members, mostly from Craven County, along with some from Jones, Lenoir, Pitt and Onslow counties.
