Firefighters in Randolph County prepare to pay tribute to Dakota Snavely, a Stanly County firefighter who died while responding to a water rescue Sunday night. They draped a U.S. Flag across East Dixie Drive around lunchtime Wednesday as a procession carrying the body of the 17-year-old from East Side Volunteer Fire Department in Albemarle drives from the Medical Examiner's Office in Raleigh, through Asheboro, to Albemarle. Snavely had been dispatched Sunday night to a water rescue at Morrow Mountain State Park. A volunteer for the East Side department for three years, he had been at a friend's house in Oakboro when the rescue call came in, according to media reports. Investigators say a truck hauling chickens lost control on N.C. 205 just outside Oakboro, and the young firefighter was killed when his vehicle hit the truck. (Scott Pelkey / The Courier-Tribune)
