Incident occurred Thursday night at an apartment complex on Confederate Drive

WILMINGTON -- A Wilmington man was cited after accidentally shooting his friend at a Port City apartment complex Thursday.

Daniel Perry was cited for resisting, delaying or obstructing a public officer and discharging a firearm within city limits, according to Wilmington Police Department spokeswoman Jennifer Dandron. Perry's age wasn't immediately available.

Around 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Wilmington police were called to New Hanover Regional Medical Center for a man with a gunshot wound. Police spoke with the victim, friends and family and Perry, who had driven the victim to the hospital.

Eventually they determined that Perry and the victim had been walking down a staircase in an apartment at 2406 Confederate Drive when Perry went to move his gun into his pocket. Dandron said the gun accidentally discharged, striking the victim.

Dandron said the victim told police that he believed the shooting was truly an accident, and that the gun was Perry's personal firearm.
