Two students awarded scholarships

SOUTHEASTERN N.C. -- The N.C. Restaurant & Lodging Association’s philanthropic arm, the North Carolina Hospitality Education Foundation has announced its scholarship and grant recipients for 2018. Sixteen students, and one educator, within the state have been selected to receive $49,000 in scholarships and grant funding.

Scholarships are distributed to students pursuing post-secondary studies in culinary arts, restaurant management or similar fields, or to students whose parents are current hospitality industry employees. Grant funding supports educators in those fields.

Students receiving the William F. Carl Scholarship from this area are: Brooke Maynor of Southport (attends Meredith College), and Taylor Pederson of Concord (attends the University of North Carolina Wilmington). Taylor and Brooke were each awarded $3,500.

Scholarship and grant recipients will be honored at the 2018 Excellence in Education Awards Breakfast on June 18, at the Prestonwood Country Club, prior to NC HEF’s annual Future of Hospitality Golf Classic.

PCCS awarded Cannon Grant

PENDER COUNTY -- Pender County Christian Services Inc. has been awarded a $20,000 grant by The Cannon Foundation to be used toward constructing an addition to the existing PCCS building at 210 W. Fremont St. in Burgaw.

The 930-square-foot addition is needed to enhance the nonprofit organization's services and will help PCCS accommodate the growing need in the community. In 2017, PCCS served 13,224 families in need with food and/or clothing. In addition, 36,854 people had received assistance through the organization, including migrant workers, those that had suffered abused, homeless individuals, and those referred to PCCS by its partnering agencies.

The Cannon Foundation, located in Concord is part of the philanthropic legacy of Charles A. Cannon, an industrialist and humanitarian. Cannon served as president and chairman of the Cannon Mills Company for more than 50 years.

National Merit Scholarship Winners

EVANSTON, ILL. -- The National Merit Scholarship Corp. recently announced this year’s National Merit $2,500 Scholarship winners. The 2,500 Merit Scholar designees were chosen from a talent pool of more than 15,000 outstanding finalists in the 2018 National Merit Scholarship Program.

The following students from this area are among the winners:

Madison X. Lee of Wilmington, Hoggard High School. Probable career field, economics. Gabrielle Marushack of Wilmington, N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, Durham. Probable career field, neurobiology.
