The importance of mathematics instruction in our schools cannot be overestimated. To emphasize this reality, the North Carolina Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCCTM) and the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction(NCDPI) strive to recognize and reward teachers who exemplify mathematics teaching excellence by nurturing students' enthusiasm for mathematics through everyday classroom experiences.

This recognition is for those teachers who succeed in motivating students to excel in mathematics. Each year, either an elementary or secondary teacher is recognized. This is the year for honoring a secondary teacher.

Each principal was asked to select an outstanding teacher from their school and applications were forwarded to the district for review. A panel reviewed each application and selected a teacher from our district to receive this recognition.

Our district awardee will receive:

a one year's membership in the NCCTM,

a personalized award,

recognition at the NCCTM State Conference,

NCCTM State Conference Attendance provided by the district, and

His/her Name will appear in the Fall 2018 issue of the NCCTM journal, the Centroid, and on NCCTM’s and NCDPI’s website.

Craven County Schools is proud to announce Cindy Laird as the Outstanding Secondary Mathematics teacher for 2018.

Ms. Laird is a seventh-grade teacher at Tucker Creek Middle School and serves in many leadership roles, both in her school and at the district level. She had participated in and led many professional development sessions.

Ms. Laird teaches using a flipped classroom which allows for individual assistance during the school day, always looks for real world applications for mathematical concepts, uses data to direct instruction and is very famous for her “Favorite No” strategy to engage students in mathematical discourse.

Again, congratulations Ms. Laird!
