N.C. House District 14 Republican candidates were sent the following questions by The Daily News in advance of the May 8 primary election. Joseph McLaughlin is challenging incumbent George Cleveland for the seat in the primaries while the winner of the primary will be up against democrat Isaiah Johnson. Why are you running? To continue serving the people in House District 14 and the State of North Carolina.

What experience do you have that makes you a good fit for this office? I retired from the Marine Corps after 25 years of service after which I taught school for about eight years. I then served as an Assistant Security Officer, Office of Diplomatic Security, US Department of State in Rome, Italy. Upon returning to the United States I became involved in local politics in Onslow Country and was elected to the House District 14 seat in 2004. I have served continuously since that time with Honesty, Principles and Integrity. I have proven that I am a good fit for this office.

If elected, what would you do to stay transparent as an elected official? I am transparent. My local phone number is in the phone book. What would you do on the state level to address the lack of mental health and substance abuse treatment options in Onslow County? We have secured funding to open a facility here in Onslow County. I will continue to address funding going forward to maintain and grow mental health support in Onslow County.

If elected, what would be your first order of business? When I am reelected I will continue to work for the betterment of my District, Onslow County and the State.
