Craven Community College (Craven CC) will host its third annual Community Day on the Havelock campus with an array of fun, family-oriented games and activities for the public to enjoy. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, April 21 and is sponsored by the Havelock Campus Student Services department.
The concept behind Community Day started with the college’s annual Open House hosted on the New Bern campus and was expanded to make it more family- and community-oriented. The event gives Craven CC a chance to thank the community for its support while offering a fun way to explore all the programs and opportunities available at the college.
“Our intent with Community Day here at Havelock is to have people come together on campus and highlight the various organizations and what they have to offer for the local community and the marines, sailors and their families stationed at MCAS Cherry Point,” said Wally Calabrese, Craven CC dean of the Havelock campus. “We also want to highlight all the great programs that the college has to offer. Many in our community still don’t fully understand what the college has to offer for them at both campus locations, whether it’s through workforce development, career programs or liberal arts university transfer.”
Those in attendance can enjoy an abundance of entertainment including a live performance by local band “HootNanny,” as well as free haircuts from the barbering program, face painting, science demonstrations, Coastal Community Action Bus Tour, educational open house, displays by Fire and Rescue, laser tag, corn hole and numerous children’s activities. Local food truck vendors “Caution Food Truck Ahead!” and “Nest Café on Wheels” will have food for sale during the event.
Academic, financial aid and VA advisors will be available to answer general questions regarding services available at Craven CC’s Havelock campus. They will also provide assistance for anyone interested in filling out a Craven CC application, filling out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and finding scholarships. Students with a Craven CC student ID will qualify for giveaways.
“We can’t be a community college without the wonderful community that we’re in,” said Sylvia King, Craven CC director of student services in Havelock. “It’s amazing that there are still people throughout the community that don’t even realize we’re here in this location.”
Local businesses, nonprofit agencies, a soccer league and many others will be on campus to share information about their organizations. This is a great time to learn about the college and all the great resources in the City of Havelock, Havelock Chamber, Havelock Public Library, Havelock Parks and Recreation, Havelock Police Department, City of Havelock Fire - Rescue Department, Craven CC Student Government Association, Early College EAST and NC State Engineering at Craven CC.
“My personal hope for this event is that the local community will learn all the great things our college has to offer, and the students will learn about all the great things that the Havelock community has to offer for them,” said Calabrese.
