Roger Williams has been appointed executive director of the Spartanburg Area Mental Health Center, the state Department of Mental Health announced Wednesday.

He had been serving as interim director since last month. He succeeds Dr. William Powell

“Roger has repeatedly shown his dedication to improving the lives of people with mental illness, having served (the Department of Mental Health) across the state for more than 25 years,” Deputy Director of Community Mental Health Services Debbie Blalock said in a statement. “The Spartanburg area is his home, and I know he will continue to use his leadership skills to serve the citizens of Cherokee, Spartanburg and Union counties.”

For the past 11 years, Williams has served as the director of the state Department of Mental Health's Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing. He previously worked in community and inpatient settings.

A licensed master social worker, he was the department’s employee of the year in 2012.

The Spartanburg Area Mental Health Center provides services to adults, children and families affected by serious mental illness and significant emotional disorders.
