First Bank selects three winners for Q3 ‘Dream It. Do It.’

SOUTHERN PINES — First bank announced its third-quarter “Dream It. Do it.” campaign winners. Included were 13-year-old Chase Clark of Colfax, who started the non-profit Chase’s Chance to support local and international causes; 16-year-old Christopher Branch of Fairmont, who is battling a life-threatening illness; and Kim Smith of Matthews, a mother who, in seeking to help her own daughter with autism, created a program that now helps close to 50 children with special needs. Smith was awarded $15,000. Clark and Branch were each awarded $5,000.


Construction employment rises in 35 states and D.C.

ARLINGTON, Va. — Thirty-five states and the District of Columbia added construction jobs between January 2017 and January 2018, while 32 states and D.C. added construction jobs between December and January, according to an analysis by the Associated General Contractors of America of Labor Department data. California added the most jobs, followed by Florida and Washington. Seventeen states lost construction jobs between December and January, while construction employment was unchanged in Kansas and New York. Pennsylvania lost the most construction jobs.


North Carolina adds jobs in January

CHARLOTTE — According to economic reports from the Wells Fargo Economics Group, North Carolina employers added 8,700 jobs at the start of 2018 and annual revisions confirmed year-over-year job growth moderated to a pace now even with the nation. The unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.5 percent.
