Officials plan to burn nearly 640 acres if the weather cooperates
BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- If weather conditions cooperate, Orton Plantation plans to burn about 640 acres Tuesday as part of its land management plan.
The controlled burn could create smoky conditions along N.C. 133, and smoke is likely to be visible -- and potentially wafting -- across much of the Wilmington area.
Officials said residents with concerns should contact the N.C. Forest Service at 919-857-4801.
Orton annually burns sections of its nearly 6,000 acres to restore longleaf pine habitat and reduce dangerous loads of undergrowth and bush that accumulate during the year and can help fuel wildfires.
The controlled burning season generally runs from about March to May.
