Unemployment rate unchanged in January

RALEIGH — The state’s seasonally adjusted January unemployment rate was 4.5 percent, remaining unchanged from December’s revised rate, according to the N.C. Department of Commerce. The national rate remained unchanged at 4.1 percent. North Carolina’s January unemployment rate decreased 0.4 of a percentage point from a year ago. The number of people employed increased 3,505 over the month to 4,747,769 and increased 85,879 over the year. The number of people unemployed increased 407 over the month to 222,256 and decreased 20,263 over the year. County unemployment rates for January will be released March 16.

Construction employers add 61,000 jobs in February

ARLINGTON, VA. — Construction employment increased by 61,000 jobs in February to the highest level since June 2008 as rising pay rates enabled the industry to attract more workers, according to an analysis of new government data by the Associated General Contractors of America. Construction employment totaled 7.173 million in February, a gain of 61,000 for the month and 254,000, or 3.7 percent, over 12 months. In addition, year-over-year growth rate in industry jobs was more than double the 1.6 percent rise in total non-farm payroll employment.
