A Spartanburg man has been charged with attempted murder after police said he hit another man in the head with a baseball bat.

James Daryl Gray, 39, of 741 N. Liberty St., was charged after an incident Monday, a Spartanburg Police Department incident report states.

The report states officers responded to a call about a man with a head wound walking on Fernwood Glendale Road. They met with the victim, who told officers he had been attacked by Gray, the report states.

As police were speaking with the victim, Gray walked up, saying he acted in self defense, the report states.

Gray admitted to hitting the victim with the bat, and he was put in handcuffs for questioning by police, according to the report.

Investigators said they later talked to two women who witnessed the attack. They both told officers Gray walked into a home on Fernwood Glendale Road and hit the victim in the back of the head with the bat, the report states.

The strike left an inch-long, bloody cut, according to the report.

Gray has been charged with attempted murder and malicious injury to property.

He remained in the Spartanburg County jail on $8,500 bond Tuesday.
