A Jacksonville man has been charged with strangling a woman on Christmas Eve.

Corey Antoine Gainey, 48, of New Bern Highway in Jacksonville was arrested by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Office on Jan. 10, and charged with assault by strangulation and assault on a female.

Gainey is accused of wrapping both hands around a woman's neck causing loss of breathe and leaving bruise marks on her neck during a domestic altercation, according to warrants. He is also accused of striking her numerous times in the upper part of her body causing puffiness inside her lower eyelid, according to warrants.

Maj. Chris Thomas said the woman came to the OCSO on Dec. 24 to file a report on the alleged assault which took place at Gainey’s residence.

“There was physical evidence on the victim that was consistent with being punched and strangled,” Thomas said. Warrants were then taken out on Gainey.

Gainey appeared before Judge Sarah Seaton in Onslow County District Court on Jan. 11 for his first appearance where he was provided Jacksonville lawyer Mark Raynor as his court-appointed attorney. Gainey remains in custody under a $50,000 bond. Gainey’s next court date is scheduled for Feb. 1.
