Tyler Holding, 27, died in the 7:51 p.m. accident near Old Mill Road.

CASTLE HAYNE -- A Wilmington man was killed Monday evening in a wreck on Blue Clay Road in Castle Hayne, according to the State Highway Patrol.

Tyler Holding, 27, died in the 7:51 p.m. accident near Old Mill Road.

According to SHP First Sgt. M.W. King, Holding was driving at “high speeds” in a Chevrolet sedan when he and a Chrysler sedan, also driving above the speed limit, lost control after hitting the railroad tracks.

King said both vehicles went off the right side of the road, with the Chrysler hitting a utility pole.

The Chevrolet continued back off to the road, and then ran off on the left side, striking a railroad-crossing sign before slamming into an oak tree. Holding was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the Chrysler, whose name was not immediately available, was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center and later released.

King said it was not yet known why both vehicles were traveling at such high speeds on the 55-mph two-lane road.

He said no charges have yet been filed in the case and the investigation is ongoing.
