The Etowah Sewer Co. had an overflow of untreated wastewater, diluted with stormwater from Tropical Storm lrma, on Tuesday of an estimated 14,700 gallons.

The overflow occurred at the main pump station at the Wastewater Treatment Plant at 129 Shopping Center Drive, Etowah.

An estimated 12,000 gallons of the diluted untreated wastewater flowed into Gash Creek in the French Broad River Basin.

The cause of the overflow was damage due to lightning.

N.C. Emergency Management was notified of the incident on Tuesday. The Division of Water Resources was notified Wednesday and is reviewing the matter.
