Residents in Jacksonville and surrounding communities were temporarily without Verizon service Monday due to what company officials say was a connectivity issue.

Early reports, including information from a local Verizon store, indicated service was out because a cell tower was down.

"A connectivity issue caused a service interruption for some of our customers in Wilmington, Jacksonville and New Bern, North Carolina earlier today," Verizon media contact Carolyn Schamberger wrote in an email to The Daily News. "Our engineers worked with our vendor partner to resolve the issue and service was restored by approximately 3:30 p.m. Eastern this afternoon."

Other cell phone carriers and customers, as well as some cable providers, may have been affected, according to reports.
