Herman Samuel Dawson, 44, is being held on $1 million bail in the New Hanover County jail.

CAROLINA BEACH -- A Carolina Beach man was arrested Thursday evening on 12 counts involving the sexual assault of a child, according to police.

Herman Samuel Dawson, 44, is charged with three counts of second-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, three counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count each of statutory sex offense, second-degree forcible sex, indecent liberties with a child, sexual battery, possession of photographic image from peeping and providing tobacco to a person under 18. The sexual assault victim was a 14-year-old girl.

Dawson, of 602 Harper Ave., was arrested in the area of Snows Cut Bridge just before 8:30 p.m. Thursday, according to Carolina Beach Police Detective Scott Hettinger.

Hettinger said Dawson’s arrest came after a four-month investigation that stemmed from a report filed by the victim. The investigation included interviews with witnesses and victims, the collection of evidence and a forensic examination of digital media, Hettinger said.

He made his first appearance in court on Friday and has hired his own attorney. His bail is set at $1 million.
