Since 1944, the Wilmington Civitan Club has awarded over $637,000 in scholarships to high school seniors.
WILMINGTON -- In 1944, three concerned and devoted Wilmington Civitan Club members proposed granting a scholarship. Each donated $50 from personal funds and the club matched that with $150, increasing the award to $300. Continuing the positive momentum, in the past 74 years, the Wilmington Civitan Club has awarded over $637,000 in scholarships to deserving New Hanover and Pender county high school seniors.
Fast forward. The Wilmington Civitan Club awarded $1,000 scholarships to 13 graduating seniors at the club’s 74th annual Scholarship Day luncheon on May 21 at Pine Valley United Methodist Church. Award recipients represented eight high schools. Awards were based on academic achievement, school and community volunteer activities, and financial need. School counselors and family members accompanied each student at the luncheon.
The 2018 Civitan scholarship recipients were Benjamin Edwards, Coastal Christian H.S.; Abigail Lopez-Sanchez, Pender H.S.; Louis Woodbeck, Pender Early College; Aveyan Walker, Pender Early College; Mia Clarke, New Hanover H.S.; J.T. Simpson, Pender Early College; Alex McGowan, Pender H.S.; Chase Norris, Pender H.S.; Amaya Shaw, Wilmington Early College; Molly Johnson, Topsail H.S.; Zaire Hansley, Hoggard H.S.; Garrett Smith, Laney H.S.; and Margaret Everett, Wilmington Early College.
The graduates will attend Appalachian State University, UNC-Chapel Hill, UNC-Charlotte, Fayetteville State University, UNC-Greensboro, Liberty University, N.C. State University, Virginia Commonwealth University, and UNC-Wilmington. Major fields of interest in college include business, international business, chemistry, mechanical engineering, neuroscience, parks, recreation, tourism, political science, psychology, and sports management.
The luncheon guest speaker was the Honorable Rebecca Blackmore, District Court Judge, retired. Civitan Nancy Pritchett is the club’s scholarship administrator and announced the award winners. She was assisted by committee members Carlton Allegood, Lee Backston, Alexander Koonce, Vance Meanor, Ellie O’Connor, Mike Page, Rob Penn, and Todd Toconis. Chris Johnston, club chaplain, delivered the invocation. Beth Pancoe serves as Wilmington Civitan Club President and hosted the event. For more information, go to www.civitanwilmingtonnc.org.
